When a house is built in an area not served by a municipal water supply, a private well system with a pump is used. Most well pumps are quite powerful, often capable of delivering more gallons per minute than any single faucet could draw. These well pumps can burn out prematurely if they are made to start and stop more than necessary. The potable water tank allows water to be used in a leisurely manner over a long period of time, with the pump running briefly to refill the tank.
A potable water tank uses a bladder to contain the water and separate it from the air. The compressed air is used to force the well water through your plumbing system. Eventually the bladder will leak, allowing the compressed air to slowly bleed out. Once the air pressure has diminished, your well pump will begin to cycle more frequently causing your damage to the pump.
It is at this point your potable water tank should be replaced to avoid premature costly well pump replacement.
Signs:
• Low water pressure
• Erratic water pressure change (very noticeable in shower)
• Inability to use more than 2 fixtures at one time
• Frequent clicking noise coming from pump control box
• Water pump cycling more frequently
